Zoology

The Department of Zoology is one of the premier departments of the College, renowned for its rich legacy and consistent academic excellence. Established in 1964 as the Department of Biology, it has grown from its initial role of offering pre-degree classes into a leading centre for zoological studies. A significant milestone was achieved in 1967 with the introduction of the B.Sc. Degree course in Zoology. In recognition of its sustained academic and research contributions, the department was elevated to the status of a Post Graduate Department in 2013. With three approved research guides, the department is now fully geared to attain the status of a Research Department in the near future.

Our department is proudly supported by the DST-FIST (Department of Science and Technology – Fund for Improvement of S&T Infrastructure) and the DBT-STAR College Scheme, which have significantly enhanced our research and teaching capabilities. Our faculty members have successfully completed major research projects funded by national bodies like the UGC (University Grants Commission) and KSCSTE (Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment). We actively foster a spirit of inquiry through collaborative research projects with other prestigious institutions, supported by the Kerala State Biodiversity Board, and the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Govt. of Kerala.

This commitment to excellence is reflected in our students. Our students consistently secure top ranks in university examinations and achieve high grades. Our esteemed alumni routinely gain admission to postgraduate and research programs in the nation’s top universities, spreading the proud tradition of the department.

We provide students with an exceptional learning environment supported by outstanding infrastructure:

  • Zoological Museum: A rich and diverse museum featuring a vast collection of specimens, bones, and fossils from across the animal kingdom.
  • Advanced Laboratories: Well-equipped laboratories with modern instruments, for molecular biology and environmental biology research.
  • Enrichment Programs: We ensure continuous learning through the periodic organization of workshops, seminars with inter-disciplinary collaborations, and frequent visits by eminent persons in the field of biology.

The department is also committed to sustainability and is implementing eco-friendly practices.

The department is powered by five permanent faculty members, including three approved research guides, along with distinguished guest faculty who together cultivate a dynamic and comprehensive learning environment. We have an active Zoology Association for nurturing well-rounded individuals. Our students are highly active in co-curricular activities such as NCC, NSS, sports, and cultural events. With a steadfast commitment to advancing knowledge and fostering student success, the Department of Zoology continues to thrive as a centre of learning and innovation, placing a strong emphasis on cutting-edge research. Guided by experienced research supervisors, the department believes that research is the key to shaping a better future and is actively striving to become a renowned research centre.
