Chemistry
The Department of chemistry was established in 1967 and was raised to a post graduate department in 1998. The department has maintained good academic record. The department has also co-ordinated job oriented courses like BSc (Industrial Chemistry). National seminars sponsored by the UGC and KSCSTE are regularly conducted by the department.

Department of Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry, established in 1967, is one of the distinguished academic departments of Christian College, Chengannur, with a strong legacy of excellence in teaching, research, and scientific innovation. Over the decades, the department has evolved into a vibrant centre for higher learning, nurturing generations of students who have excelled in academics, research, industry, and entrepreneurship. A major milestone in its academic journey was the introduction of the M.Sc. Programme in Analytical Chemistry in 1998, followed by its elevation as a Research Centre of the University of Kerala in 2023, strengthening the department’s commitment to advanced research and doctoral studies.
The department provides strong academic training in core areas of Chemistry while integrating emerging interdisciplinary fields such as Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Advanced Materials Chemistry and Applied Analytical Chemistry. A unique academic distinction of the department is its specialized undergraduate programme leading to B.Sc. Chemistry with Specialization in Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, preparing students for diverse careers in higher education, research, and the pharmaceutical industry.
Supported by highly qualified faculty members, modern laboratories, and advanced scientific instrumentation, the department actively promotes cutting-edge research across major domains including:
- Advanced Materials and Nanoscience (Nanomaterials, Bionanocomposites, Metal Organic Frameworks, Surface Chemistry)
- Applied Chemical Sciences (Photocatalysis, Coordination Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Functional Chemical Systems)
- Computational and Pharmaceutical Chemistry (Computational Chemistry, Molecular Modelling, Drug Design, Medicinal Chemistry)
The department has published over 120 research papers and successfully completed several funded research projects, reflecting its growing research excellence. Prestigious national funding support through DST-FIST and the DBT-STAR College Scheme has significantly strengthened its research infrastructure and academic capabilities.
With its strong blend of academic excellence, innovative research, modern infrastructure, and student-centered learning, the Department of Chemistry continues to emerge as a centre of excellence, committed to shaping future scientists, researchers, innovators, and leaders in the field of chemical sciences.
